We judge people every single day. Sometimes without even realizing it.
We see someone who's always quiet and assume they're unfriendly. Someone who's successful and assume they've had it easy. Someone who's angry and label them as difficult. Someone who made a decision we wouldn't have made and immediately think they're wrong.
The truth is, our brains are wired to make quick judgments. It's how we simplify a world that's far too complex to fully understand. The problem isn't that we make assumptions. The problem is when we mistake them for the truth.
Every person you meet has experiences you know nothing about. The relationship that broke them. The childhood that shaped them. The loss they're quietly carrying. The battle they're fighting that never makes it to social media. None of that is visible from the outside.
The more certain we are that we know who someone is, the less open we become to discovering who they actually are. That's why judgment and an open mind can't exist at the same time. The moment we decide we already know someone's story, we stop listening. We stop asking questions. We stop learning. Having an open mind doesn't mean agreeing with everyone's choices or accepting harmful behavior. It means recognizing that your perspective is limited and so is everyone else's.
One of the greatest signs of emotional maturity isn't having the right opinion. It's being willing to admit that you don't have the whole story.
Because the truth is... You never know what's behind someone else's closed doors. And sometimes, the kindness you choose today is for a battle you'll never get to see.
