Starting over is often an act of courage, not failure

August 21, 2026

There comes a point in many people's lives when they realize that the life they've built no longer feels like the life they want. A relationship no longer feels right. A career that once felt exciting now feels empty. The goals they've been chasing no longer reflect who they've become. Yet many people stay exactly where they are. Not because they're happy. Because starting over feels terrifying.

Somewhere along the way, we've been taught that starting over means we failed. If a relationship ends, we failed. If we change careers, we failed. If we move to a new city, begin again, or choose a different path, it must mean the years before were wasted. But I don't believe that's true. Sometimes the greatest failure isn't starting over. It's staying somewhere that no longer allows you to grow simply because you've already invested so much. We often hold on because we're attached to the time we've spent, the effort we've made, or the future we imagined.

We tell ourselves: "I've already come this far." "What if I regret leaving?"."What will other people think?" So we remain in situations that no longer align with the person we've become. The truth is, growth changes us. The version of you who made certain decisions five years ago isn't the same person reading this today. And that's not something to be ashamed of. It's evidence that you've lived, learned, and evolved. Starting over doesn't erase your past. You take every lesson, every mistake, every success, and every experience with you. Nothing is wasted. In fact, those experiences are often the reason you're capable of creating something better.

I've learned that courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is choosing to move forward even when you don't know exactly how everything will unfold. There will never be a perfect moment. There will always be uncertainty. There will always be reasons to stay where it's familiar. But familiar doesn't always mean fulfilling.

Sometimes the life you've been hoping for begins the moment you're willing to let go of the one you've outgrown. Starting over isn't admitting defeat. It's believing that your future deserves the chance to be different from your past. And sometimes, that's one of the bravest decisions you'll ever make.
