Confidence Isn’t Something You Have - It’s Something You Build!!!!!
One of the biggest misconceptions I’ve noticed is that people believe confidence comes first.
They think:
“Once I feel confident, I’ll… apply for that job, start dating again, speak up in meetings.”
But what if we’ve been looking at confidence backwards? Confidence doesn’t usually come before action. It comes because of action.
Imagine two people.
The first person waits until they feel confident before taking the next step. They spend months preparing, thinking, researching, and wondering if they’re ready.
The second person is just as nervous. Their hands shake. They doubt themselves. They wonder if they’ll fail. But they take the first step anyway.
Fast forward six months.
Who do you think is more confident?
Not the person who waited.
The person who acted.
Because confidence isn’t created by thinking. It’s created by collecting evidence. Every time you do something difficult, your brain quietly updates its beliefs about you.
“Maybe I can handle hard things.”
“Maybe I’m more capable than I thought.”
That doesn’t mean you’ll stop feeling fear. It means fear stops making your decisions for you.
I think this is where many of us get stuck. We mistake fear for a sign that we’re not ready. But fear doesn’t always mean “Don’t do it. Sometimes it simply means, “This matters to you.”
Our brains are designed to protect us.
They like certainty.
They prefer what’s familiar.
Trying something new - a new relationship, a new career, a difficult conversation - creates uncertainty.
And uncertainty often feels uncomfortable. But uncomfortable doesn’t always mean wrong. Sometimes it’s simply the feeling of growth.
One of my favorite ways to think about confidence is this:
Confidence isn’t a personality trait. It’s a memory. It’s your brain remembering all the times you showed up, even when you were scared.
So if you’re waiting to feel confident before taking the next step, maybe ask yourself a different question.
What if confidence isn’t the requirement? What if it’s the reward?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Can you think of a time when your confidence grew only after you took the first step?
Want to talk it through?
A short, no-pressure conversation is often the clearest place to start.
